The Get Bigger Guys
Alright so you have decided to start working out, however you don’t know what type of exercises you should do, routine you should follow and time to work out. Well you are in luck. I will provide you with some helpful info on just where to get started.
When to work out?
The first thing is, you have to figure out when you should be working out. Read a previous article by CLICKING HERE on the best workout times and see where you stand. I cannot stress enough no matter what you choose just make sure you workout and you are consistent, that is key.
Simpler Is Better
As you start working out you will see some gains you can be sure of that. You should however follow a few basic exercises so that you can build a good solid foundation. I personally would stay away from shaping exercises in the beginning as you try to build some mass. It is a complete waste of time doing these, unless you are not a beginner, and if you weren’t a beginner you wouldn’t be reading this. With that being said shaping will come later down the road, just not yet.
Whole Body Workouts
As you start your mission on Getting Big you first must get fully acquainted with the many items in the gym. In a previous post (HERE) I touched on how machines have their place. Don’t rely on these, huge mistake. Rather then focusing on them work your way towards them. Like shaping exercises these will have a place in your workouts, just not yet. I would start your work out regime with a full body type workout or a upper and lower routine. By doing this you will be able to try many different exercises each day and you will learn how to properly do the exercises as the weeks progress. Rest periods can range anywhere from 30 secs up to 2 minutes. Since you are new focus on getting comfortable and as the comfort comes you will lower your rest times.
You Want Mass!!!
Start your initial training by working out (lifting weights)3 days a week. This will allow your body the necessary rebuilding and recovery time it needs and also will help you get into the groove of things. If you want to throw some cardio in there or do some cardio on the off days that’s fine but for weightlifting stick to 3 days. For your upper portion of the workouts stick to exercises like Barbell curls, Bench Press (Incline and Flat), Military Press, Close Grip Bench, Pull Ups and even Dead Lifts. You can use the variations of these few exercises with dumbbells however using the Barbell I find was the greatest way for me to start. It worked for me it may just work for you.
So what about the lower body?
The lower body is where it gets tricky. I know I said stay away from machines however legs is where they can be used in the initial start up for working out. The main exercises you should focus on for legs are Barbell Squats, Barbell Lunges and Machine Hack Squat/Leg Presses. You could use other machines for working out the Hamstrings and Quads but first start with these few exercises to build a foundation. Once the foundation is strong then we can build on top of that.
